Shawn directs the elder law section of ThompsonMcMullan, a Richmond, VA law firm, and practices in the areas of elder law, disability planning, and estate planning and administration. Since 1989, he has spoken frequently for the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Virginia Bar Association, the Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Special Needs Alliance (of which he is a long term member), the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia (of which he is adjunct faculty, in the College of Legal Medicine), the University of Virginia School of Law, the National Geriatric Care Managers Association, the Virginia State Bar, local chapters of the Virginia Society of Public Accountants, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and many national legal, accounting and medical continuing education programs.

Joanne has served as the executive director of Commonwealth Community Trust, a leading national nonprofit organization that administers pooled special needs trusts, since 2000. She speaks frequently to professional groups and community organizations on the topic of pooled special needs trust and has published articles in publications from the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), American Association for Justice, Special Needs Alliance, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Virginia State Bar, The Legal Examiner, Autism Asperger’s Digest, The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), United Spinal Association, Brain Injury Association of Virginia, and CPA Solutions.
